There is a high probability that many participants come from Microsoft computing and that they are not very familiar with Open Source computing. A market share of about 90% in the client world will confirm this. That's why we think migration should be a smooth process. Our conference topics have been selected especially to fit this requirement. Working in a heterogenous environment will show you how both Operating Systems can work together nicely:
1) Security demonstration:
Today's threats against Microsoft networks. We will show how hackers attack
a Microsoft network (Server and clients). This traffic will be analyzed
with Linux tools. Countermeasures will be explained. The IT-Specialists prepare an
e-business model at current time.
2) Security demonstration:
Spam is an increasing annoyance. In Europe we have reached a levelof 50%
ham (good mails) to 50% spam ratio. Bringing a Linux Mailserver within your ISP's
Mailserver and your Exchange Server can reduce spam and virus threatening.
No software costs apply because all products are OS (Postfix,Spamassassin
and ClamAV). The IT-Specialists prepare an e-business model atcurrent time.
3) First steps using Debian:
Debian Sarge final version was released few weeks ago. Installation and
tips and tricks will be shown by the IT-Specialists.
4) Running Ubuntu on client machines:
Ubuntu is called the shooting star amoung the Linux distributions. It's
ideally suited for client machines. This distribution is considered a
future topic in Africa. The look and feel of Ubuntu will be demonstrated
by the IT-Specialists.
5) Using Open Office as a free alternative to Microsoft Office:
Version 2.0 is still beta. It might be ready by the time we meet.
The IT-Specialists will demonstrate the included programs that substitute
Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
Additionally we show how to create PDF files for free. This
demonstrations will be run under Microsoft Windows. Feel free to bring
your own notebook.
6) Using Mozilla Firefox as a free alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer:
In our security demonstration you will see how you may become
infecteted with trojans by just browsing with Internet Explorer. This
threat is considered as becoming a major malware player in the next
future. Substitution of IE with the free Firefox may reduce exposure to threats
without extra costs. Firefox is available for Microsoft and Linux. You
will see that it's easy to migrate and you will even have features that
are currently not available in IE.
7) Terminalserver (TS) and Thin clients:
Using a TS and thin clients may reduce Total Cost of Ownership. This
topic is another e-business model being trained in Germany at the moment. The
IT-Specialists will present a solution with all the pro's and con's. We will
discuss scenarios where you may want to use this techniques.
