Facts & Figures: The Soweto Digital Village concept under the auspices of Microsoft and Africare became a reality in March 1997 when the then CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates officially opened the Soweto Digital Village in Chiawelo – Soweto to the public. The main aim of the digital village is to provide the previously disadvantaged community members of Soweto with training in and access to information and communication technology.The centre is equipped with the state-of-the-art technology, including computers and Internet access. The centre provides the surrounding communities, schools, students and local entrepreneurs with the opportunity to develop their computer skills, access to and usage of information and communication technology.
